Inside Graduate Admissions: Merit, Diversity, and Faculty Gatekeeping (Faculty and Staff Session)
October 12, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
Join OGE Diversity Initiatives and MIT University Center for Exemplary Mentoring (UCEM) for a book lecture by Prof. Julie Posselt on her most recent book, Inside Graduate Admissions: Merit, Diversity, and Faculty Gatekeeping. Drawing on firsthand observations of admission committees and interviews with faculty in 10 top-ranked doctoral programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, education Prof. Julie Posselt pulls back the curtain on a process usually conducted in secret. She presents her findings from the decision makers point of view which highlight how disciplinary norms shape what counts as merit, how professor’s good intentions around diversity often don’t translate into results, and concrete strategies to improve the admissions review process that promote transparency and accountability.
