A Chance to Dress: screening and discussion
October 13, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm| Free
Dr. John Southard, a world renown and respected geologist and Professor Emeritus in Course 12, is an open cross-dresser. The film A Chance to Dress explores the various dimensions of identity and the diversity of gender expression. A Chance To Dress follows Dr. Southard’s challenges and difficulties in coming out to his friends, neighbors and colleagues, but also his exuberance and sense of liberation after a lifetime of secrecy. He is an educator in our society who can enlighten us about the history of the earth, and who, through his own embodied self, has much to teach us about being aware of all of our possibilities and what it means to be human. John’s journey weaves a story that intersects gender presentation, acceptance, the immutability of established institutions and the ultimate affirmation of the human spirit. Prof. Southard, his wife, and filmmaker Alice Bouvrie will lead a discussion following the film.
This event is co-sponsored by the MIT Libraries, Women’s and Gender Studies, and LBGTQ@MIT.
