Honoring the commitment to inclusiveness and equity for members of the campus community, MIT launched a pilot project designating multi-stalled, all-gender restrooms in different areas of the campus.

With clearance from the Massachusetts State Board of Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters, four non-residential restrooms on the MIT campus have been open for use by all members of the community and visiting users, inclusive of all gender identities. Privacy modifications have been made to the stalls and urinals in these restrooms, and updated signage identifies them as all-gender. These multi-stall facilities offer an alternative from the wait that occurs at single-stall restrooms, and were selected in areas that could help maximize access to this community resource.

MIT sought state approval to make the all-gender designation of the four pilot restrooms permanent; the Massachusetts State Board of Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters granted the approval in spring 2019.

Moving forward, the project team hopes to identify a moderate number of additional restrooms in various locations on campus that may also be modified for use by all members of the community.

This project is organized by a collaborative team of students, faculty and staff, with the support of lbgtq@MIT, MIT Facilities, Institute Community and Equity Office and the Provost’s Office.

This is a list of all-gender restroom facilities on the MIT campus.
